This amazing loop hike that explores the heart of the the Slickrock/Joyce Kilmer Wilderness area, begins and ends at Big Fat Gap. The club first began hiking this area in 1957 and was active in promoting the Slickrock area to Wilderness designation 50 years ago. The hike route heads downhill along Big Fat Branch trail to the upper portion of Slickrock Creek trail. The trail follows the creek upstream as it climbs steadily to the headwaters followed by a strenuous climb to the top of Haoe Lead Mountain. We turn left on the Haoe Lead trail and hike a few miles over to the Hangover Lead Trail. After a short side trip up to enjoy the amazing view at The Hangover, we continue on Hangover Lead back to Big Fat Gap.
Hike 11 miles RT with 3300 ft elevation gain. Rated difficult due to many creek crossings, overgrown trails and elevation gain. Water crossing shoes and hiking poles could be quite helpful. If the creek is too high we may retrace our steps to Big Fat Gap and hike over to Hangover and back. Carpool from South Maryville Walmart. Meet by 8:00 am. Drive 95 miles round trip. At $0.07/mile = $6.65 (suggest round to $7.00).
