This demanding out-and-back hike tops out at 5,820' at the fire tower. On a clear day, for those willing to climb the 60-foot-tall tower, the views include Mt. Cammerer, Max Patch and Clingmans Dome. Total mileage is 12.4 with an elevation gain of 4,200'! Rated difficult. For carpooling, meet at Cracker Barrel at I-40 Exit 398 (southeast corner of parking lot) at 7:30AM ,drive 116 miles @ 7 cents= $8.12(O.K. to round to $8). Or meet at Big Creek Picnic parking lot (east end), ready to hike at 8:45AM. The leader will meet the group at the trailhead, not the carpooling site.
