In July 1939, Guy Frizzell and Harvey Broome, two of the most instrumental leaders in the early SMHC, led one of many overnight backpacking trips into the deepest reaches of Smokies wilderness. Although club camping trips outside designated sites are a thing of the past, we will retrace part of their route with a late summer rock-hop up Eagle Rocks Prong. Along the way, we will celebrate the contributions of Guy to the hiking club and national park we enjoy today, and we will revel in the same adventurous spirit shared with hikers of generations past. In the old days, a bridge spanned the river at its confluence with Ramsey Prong, and a rough trail ran from there up to Buck Fork. Today, the bridge is gone and the old trail is very faint. We might walk the old path for a while, but, just as it did back then, it will soon vanish, leaving us only the creek as a suitable means of travel. We will bound as far up Eagle Rocks Prong as our spirits desire, and then retrace our steps. It is recommended that you wear suitable attire for getting wet, as we will pass several irresistible swimming holes. Rated moderate. Approximately 7 miles.
