The Hemphill Bald Loop from Polls Gap is a challenging 13.6-mile hike with much to offer from big trees to outstanding views. The hike will start on the Rough Fork Trail which follows an old railroad grade gradually downhill for the first 2.5 miles. After the initial gradual decent the trail goes downhill steeply to the junction with Caldwell Fork Trail. We will proceed down Caldwell Fork where we will take a break to view one of the largest poplars in the Smokies. The giant tree is at the edge of an area of virgin forest and is a sight to behold. After the break at the poplar we will continue a short distance to the junction with the Hemphill Bald Trail. Here we begin our toughest climb of the day climbing almost 1,800’ over the next 2.9 miles to Double Gap. Along the way we pass by a huge Northern red oak with a 6’ diameter trunk. After we stop to catch our breath at Double Gap we will climb the final .7 miles up to Hemphill Bald where we will stop for lunch and admire the gorgeous views. After lunch we will continue on the Hemphill Bald Trail back to our starting point at Polls Gap. Hike is 13.6 miles, rated Difficult due to the distance and elevation gain. Carpoolers meet at Strawberry Plains Cracker Barrel at 7:00 a.m. (1510 Cracker Barrel Lane). Park on right side facing Weigels. 196 miles RT x $.07 = $13.72 to driver. Drivers must have Smokies Parking Pass. Or meet at the Hemphill Bald trailhead at Polls Gap at 9:00 a.m.
