The West Prong Trail, which derives its name from the West Prong of the Little River, is a 5.4-mile round trip hike in the Tremont area. The trail gains nearly 1,375 feet with several ascents and descents, but the effort is rewarded by the sounds of the peaceful river and water views. The beginning of this hike is a steady climb of approximately 625 feet over the first 1.4 miles. During this ascent of the northern slopes of Fodderstack Mountain, there will be occasional openings where you can enjoy views of the surrounding area. About two miles into the hike, you will come upon a small creek that does not have a bridge. If you want to keep your feet dry, you’ll just have to cross the creek by hopping from one exposed rock or log to another. Campsite 18 is located just on the other side of this crossing. At the 2.7-mile mark, the West Prong Trail ends at its juncture with the Bote Mountain Trail. We will then return to Campsite 18, have lunch, and return to the trailhead.
For those wanting to extend this hike, unofficially you could add a walk to Spruce Flats Falls from the Tremont Institute parking area. Alternatively, you could drive to the end of Tremont Road and walk along the Thunderhead Quiet Walkway for an easy out and back of 1.4 miles. It is found to the right at the trailhead for the Middle Prong Trail. It is known for solitude and creek views.
Rated moderate. For carpooling, meet at Kroger on 244 S Hall Rd, Alcoa, TN at 8:30 am (68 miles RT @.07=$4.76 (Round to $5 cash only). Drive about 35 minutes. Be ready to hike at West Prong trailhead at 9:15am.
