Enjoy panoramic views along the Cherohala Skyway to the trailhead and during the ascent north on FS Trail 95 (Fodderstack Mountain) and FS Trail 54 (Bob Bald). At lunchtime on Bob Bald, you can see the Great Smoky Mountains National Park to the north and Slickrock Creek Valley below.

From the Unicoi Crest Overlook trailhead, hike about 0.1 miles along the highway to Beech Gap (4,500' elevation), where FS Trail 95 (Fodderstack Mountain) begins. Then hike 1.9 miles to FS Trail 54A (Bob Bald Connector), followed by 1.1 miles to FS Trail 54 (Bob Stratton Bald Trail), and 0.6 miles to Bob Bald (5,280' elevation). Return the same way. Total distance is about 7.2 miles with 750 feet of elevation gain. Rated moderate.

The trailhead is at the Unicoi Crest Overlook, a parking lot 0.1 miles east of Beech Gap at the TN and NC border. From Tellico Plains, the Overlook is located on the Cherohala Skyway (TN165/NC143), about 24 miles, and about 35 minutes’ drive from the junction of TN Hwy 68 and TN 165 Cherohala Skyway. Inform the leader if you plan to carpool.
