Note: This route is subject to change due to an indeterminate reopening schedule for U.S. 441/Newfound Gap Road after damage to the road from an early August landslide event.
Heading up Walker Camp Prong, we will rock-hop almost a mile upstream to where the prong splits and clamber the ridge to the towering Spire with views of the high peaks surrounding the watershed.
Continuing along the ridge crest, we will thrash our way to a drop-down along a smaller ridge to reach the unobstructed views offered from Blueberry Hill. Our next destination is visible to the north: a lengthy old landslide scar on the steep slopes above WCP.
Once above the scar, there are several return options, including a further climb to Anakeesta Knob and back the old manway or retracing the route along Walker Camp.
Total distance of 3.5 to 4 miles, depending on the whims of the group.
Rated hard off-trail. You must register with the hike leader.
