This DLiA lead moderate Maddron Bald and Albright Grove Loop provides a hands-on experience to learn how to use iNaturalist to inventory biodiversity.

Discover Life in America (DLiA). is the nonprofit science partner of Great Smoky Mountains National Park, leading the All Taxa Biodiversity Inventory—a project to document every species in the park. Studying biodiversity in places like Great Smoky Mountains National Park is vital for protecting natural resources. The DLiA leader is Jaimie Matzko, DLiA’s Director of Communications and Outreach. She has spent more than 22 years as a naturalist and educator in the Smokies. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Studies from University of TN. Jamie was the guest speaker at the 2025 Installation Banquet.

Time is allowed for learning and observations while hiking Maddron Bald trail and Albright Grove loop. Enjoy a trail lunch rest. Return the same way. Total 6.8 miles, rated moderate.

Inform the hike leader if you plan to carpool. The carpool meets at Cracker Barrel Strawberry Plains - 1510 Cracker Barrel Lane, Exit 398 off I-40. From Knoxville, turn right off I-40, go to the first traffic light and turn right. Park on the right side of the lot. Allow time to arrange the carpool, load, and to leave by 8:00 am. Drive 1 hour, 53 miles, to Donna Joes Marathon Market on Laurel Springs Road near Maddron Bald TH. Hwy 321 across from Dollar General. Pay drivers exact change cash $8.00 (RT 108 miles x $0.07 per mile).

Everyone meets at Donna Joes Marathon Market on Laurel Springs Road, sign-in and introductions at 9:15 am. Then a very short shuttle to the trailhead. You will be notified if hazardous or other conditions require event changes.
