Hike Change: Originally scheduled (and published in the newsletter) for this date was a hike on the Lower Mount Cammerer Trail. Unfortunately, that trail has been closed due to unsafe trail conditions caused by blowdowns. So, we be going on a different hike instead.
Frozen Head is known for its sometimes-steep terrain and awe-inspiring rock formations. We will enjoy some of both on this loop hike in this state park. We will start by making our way up the North Old Mac trail, a climb of 1600 ft. in which they didn’t believe in adding switch backs. We will visit the Rock House, a rock shelter used by many for camping. Shortly after that, we will start making our way on the Chimney Top Trail. There are rolling ups and downs until we reach the summit of Chimney Top Mountain with its large “chimney” rock formations. Then we’ll make our way down the mountain, which involves many switchbacks to make up for the ones missing from the North Old Mac trail. We’ll arrive at the visitors center, and a short walk on the road will bring us back to our cars. Hike: 11.2 miles with elevation gain of 2860 ft, rated Difficult. To carpool, meet at Oak Ridge Gold’s Gym, ready to leave at 7:30am, or the Old Mac trailhead in Frozen Head at 8:15am. Drive 50 miles RT {@ 7¢/mile = $3.50}. The leader will meet the group at the trailhead, not the carpool site.
