We will start this leg-burner loop on the South Old Mac Trail and climb over 2000' through a lovely hardwood forest to the observation tower which stands at 3324'. Our return will be down the North Old Mac Trail. The tower allows for unobstructed views of East Tennessee's three main features: the Cumberland Plateau, Tennessee Valley, and across the valley to the Smoky Mountains. Hike distance is 8 miles, rated moderate-to-difficult due to elevation gain. Meet at Books-A-Million, 310 South Illinois Avenue, at 8:30 AM to carpool, or the Old Mac trailhead parking lot at 9 AM. Payment (cash only) to driver: 50 miles x 0.07=$3.50.
