In the 1987 issue of the Handbook, Ray Payne and Matthew Kelleher described the hike up Cannon Creek with the succinct warning, “They don’t get much harder!” Those joining the Club for his adventure will access Cannon Creek from the Porters Creek Trail just below the long footlog over Porters Creek, then begin a 4,300 foot climb requiring extensive rock-hopping. The 100-foot Cannon Creek Falls, perhaps the largest double-drop waterfall in the park, is the featured landmark along the way. It resides at the same approximate elevation as the Catstairs and Ramsey Cascades, and thus from the top of the precipice may offer genuine panoramic views. Upon reaching the summit of Mount Le Conte, hikers will return by the Trillium Gap and Brushy Mountain Trails. The off-trail is 3 miles and on-trail 11 miles.
