Qualifying Centennial Challenge Hike
This Centennial Challenge Hike is to one of the highest waterfalls (90 foot drop) in the park accessible by trail. The trail has undergone extensive rehabilitation resulting in a much nicer foot-bed than what existed previously. The trail starts with a relatively gentle grade on an old roadbed for the first 1.5 miles, and then, the trail narrows and becomes steeper for the next 2.5 miles up to the falls. Round trip on the trail is 8 miles with an elevation gain of 2185 ft. The hike is rated moderately difficult due to the grade and some rocky sections. Because parking at the trail head and space by the falls at the top is limited, we will start early. We will have a better chance of seeing wildlife on the trail and the falls should not be crowded. Carpool from Kroger, 244 S. Hall Road, Alcoa. Park on the side near KARM. Be ready to leave at 6:00 A.M. drive 78 miles round trip. $0.07/mile = $5.46 cash to driver (may round to $5.50). Alternatively, meet at the trail head at 7:30 A.M. The leader will be at the trailhead. After you register, please send the hike leader an email indicating whether you will meet at KARM or the trail head.
